Nuestra Liga de básquetbol tiene desde hace un tiempo un cruce de intereses planteado por sus protagonistas. La necesidad de las autoridades y dirigentes de tener un torneo rentable y atractivo choca con las aspiraciones deportivas de técnicos que pretenden un campeonato que no los deje tan expuestos. A su vez, con el fin de llenar grillas y calentar la pantalla, los dueños de los derechos de TV parecen darle la espalda al certamen en el momento de mayor expectativa.
La Liga Uruguaya de Básquetbol (LUB) se juega desde el año 2003. Llegó para suplantar al torneo Federal por más que ese año se disputaron los dos campeonatos. Ambos los ganó Defensor Sporting.
En la primera edición participaron diez equipos por invitación. Cinco de Montevideo (Aguada, Defensor Sporting, Cordon, Trouville y Welcome) y cinco del resto del país (Salto Uruguay, Paysandú Básquetbol Club, Independiente de Soriano, Anastasia de Fray Bentos y Plaza de Nueva Helvecia).
El torneo nació con la intención de integrar a los distintos equipos del país. Iniciativa que se fue apagando con el paso de los años y que según los protagonistas resultó muy difícil de aplicar al no existir un proyecto serio de formación de jugadores.
En las primeras ediciones los equipos del interior se formaron en su mayoría con jugadores y entrenadores montevideanos lo cual les permitió ser competitivos. Una vez agotados los recursos económicos se quedaron sin materia prima para salir a pelear los torneos.
En esa primera edición los equipos de Montevideo y los del interior jugaron en dos series diferentes. Los ganadores se enfrentaron en la final.
Con el paso de los años la forma de disputa del campeonato fue variando hasta el punto que hoy sólo compiten equipos montevideanos.
Precisamente uno de los puntos que genera polémica entre los protagonistas es la forma en la que se juega el torneo. La actual Liga se disputa en tres etapas: Clasificatorio, Súper Liga y Play Off.
El Clasificatorio enfrenta a los 14 equipos en una rueda. Las localías son sorteadas por lo que un conjunto puede enfrentar a sus rivales directos siempre como visitante o incluso perder el derecho de jugar como local si es que ese encuentro se fija en el Palacio Peñarol por ser considerado de alto riesgo.
Los ocho primeros clasifican a la Súper Liga mientras que los seis restantes disputarán la permanencia con chance de acceder más adelante a los play off.
La mayoría de los entrenadores coinciden en que en esa primera rueda son pocos los partidos que determinan el futuro de los equipos. Si comienzan mal quedan prácticamente sentenciados a jugar por la permanencia. Eso sin mencionar los posibles cambios de técnicos y extranjeros.
La Súper Liga enfrenta a los ocho mejores a dos ruedas arrastrando la mitad del puntaje conseguido en el Clasificatorio. Los cinco primeros clasifican a los play off mientras que los tres últimos jugarán un repechaje con los tres primeros del Permanencia.
Con este último torneo pasa algo similar. Los equipos acumulan la mitad de los puntos obtenidos aunque el sistema de disputa es a ganar o morir. Los tres primeros jugarán la repesca para meterse en octavos de final mientras que los restantes descenderán al torneo Metropolitano.
En el repechaje se respetan las localías, el equipo de la Súper Liga comienza con ventaja de uno a cero y define en su cancha.
Esto se pierde a partir de cuartos de final. Desde ese momento todos los partidos se disputan en el Palacio Peñarol en dobles jornadas televisadas.
“El campeonato está hecho para los más poderosos”
En la última edición de la Liga Goes se transformó en el equipo sensación. Con un bajo presupuesto logró colarse en los puestos de arriba en el Clasificatorio y la Súper Liga. Fue el equipo más fuerte como local (10 ganados y 2 perdidos) marca que le permitió clasificar sin inconvenientes a los play off. En esta instancia quedó eliminado con Malvín en una serie que se jugó en el Palacio Peñarol y que terminó 3 a 0 a favor del playero. El técnico misionero Álvaro Ponce es el principal detractor que tiene el actual formato del torneo. “El campeonato está destinado a profundizar las diferencias entre los 4 o 5 más poderosos con el resto. Está mal que el Clasificatorio sea a una rueda y que las localías sean por sorteo. Otro aspecto que no está bien es que exista un cupo para contratar las fichas sub 23, los clubes fuertes siempre van a contratar a los mejores, además no les permitís su formación y desarrollo porque por lo general son tapados por los mayores y extranjeros”, sentenció.
Goes quedó eliminado en cuartos de final nuevamente con Malvín quien se impuso en los tres partidos de la serie. Esta diferencia clara que se vio a favor del playero en esta instancia no fue tal a lo largo de la fase regular. Las dos veces que Malvín visitó la cancha del misionero (una en el Clasificatorio y la otra en Súper Liga) perdió claramente. Estos resultados le dan la razón a los que defienden la postura de jugar los play off en las canchas de los clubes. “Hasta la final se tiene que jugar respetando las localías y la posición que ocupen los cuadros en la fase regular, incluso si son partidos de riesgo se podría jugar sólo con público local y en todo caso el quinto y decisivo juego sí llevarlo al Palacio Peñarol”, sostuvo Ponce. Para el técnico lo ideal sería hacer el Clasificatorio a dos ruedas, la Súper Liga y Permanencia a una y luego disputar los play off.
Son varios los equipos que explotan al máximo su condición de local. Uno de ellos es Trouville que este año llegó a estar invicto durante doce partidos. Su técnico, Álvaro Tito, considera importante que se respeten las localías y que se jueguen las instancias decisivas en las canchas de los clubes. “Históricamente nos hacemos más fuertes como locales, hoy no tiene premio el equipo que termina en los puestos de arriba de la tabla general, al momento de enfrentarse con uno de abajo comienzan la serie en igualdad de condiciones”. Por ejemplo, los equipos que terminan en la cuarta y quinta posición se enfrentan en cuartos de final en una serie al mejor de cinco. Todos los partidos se disputan en el Palacio Peñarol quitándole la posibilidad al conjunto mejor posicionado de poder definir la llave en su cancha.
Para Tito el formato actual no permite tener distracciones. “Te obliga a estar a punto desde el inicio, nosotros no llegamos este año en las condiciones ideales pero tuvimos que acomodarnos sobre la marcha. Tuvimos suerte que los extranjeros llegaron en buen estado y eso sirvió para ajustar el equipo”.
Adiós juventud
Leonardo Zylberbersztein, actual entrenador de Hebraica y Macabi, considera que el actual torneo no es justo para los equipos. “No podés depender de un sorteo para saber si sos local o visitante contra los rivales fuertes, se debería jugar el Reclasificatorio a dos ruedas, sería mucho más competitivo”, expresó. Además, agregó que con este sistema prácticamente no hay margen de error por lo que se tiene que salir a ganar desde la primera fecha y eso lleva a tener poco espacio para probar cosas nuevas.
Si bien los dirigentes entienden que se debe trabajar para fomentar la formación de jugadores en todo el país, Zylbersztein señala que el actual torneo les da la espalda a los jóvenes. “En la primera rueda tenés que ganar todas las fechas porque te podés complicar, por lo general los técnicos encaramos los partidos con los mejores jugadores y los de más experiencia para no dar ventaja. Eso te lleva a acortar el plantel y muchas veces no les das minutos a los jóvenes del club, eso pasa en casi todas las instituciones”, sentenció.
Espectador de lujo
Esta temporada Marcelo Signorelli dirigió a Correcaminos de Panamá en la Liga de las Américas, equipo con el hizo una muy buena campaña clasificando a semifinales. El hecho de haber dirigido este año a nivel internacional, le permitió al técnico uruguayo seguir nuestro campeonato desde afuera y con una visión más fría y objetiva. No duda en afirmar que el torneo uruguayo no es bueno y que debería ser más competitivo. “El hecho que todos los equipos sean de Montevideo no ayuda pero yo dividiría el campeonato en zonas como pasa en otros lados, también jugaría la primera parte a dos ruedas, acá lo importante es que se jueguen más encuentros”, dijo. Para Signorelli resulta fundamental mejorar la infraestructura de nuestro básquetbol y que los equipos puedan ser locales en sus canchas en instancias decisivas. También es claro cuando se refiere a los torneos que hoy se juegan en el Uruguay. “Yo eliminaría el actual campeonato Metropolitano, jugaría un torneo de Segunda División en simultáneo con la Liga de setiembre a abril y descansaría dos meses”, sostuvo. Con esto permitiría la aparición de nuevos jugadores. Actualmente muchos deportistas y técnicos disputan la Liga y el Metropolitano en el mismo año.
Te banco los trapos
Pablo López, entrenador de Malvín y actual campeón del torneo, defiende el actual sistema de disputa y coincide con los dirigentes con lo emocionante que resulta la competición jugándose de esta manera. “Es una formato útil, permite recuperarse de un mal comienzo, la primera rueda al ser corta genera emoción que es lo que buscan las autoridades”, sostuvo.
Si bien Para López el formato del campeonato es importante, hay otros aspectos que se deberían debatir para mejorar el nivel. “Tenemos que mejorar el nivel de las canchas, elevar las condiciones para que el público se sienta cómodo, desde mejorar el piso del escenario hasta poner aires acondicionados, parece imposible pero cuando se estudia no es tan complicado”, expresó. En cuanto a lo deportivo sostiene que con algunas medidas rápidas se pueden conseguir resultados alentadores en un plazo razonable. «Hoy nuestro básquetbol carece de jugadores altos, la generación fuerte de la selección está basada en deportistas experientes que en poco tiempo dejarán el equipo y no hay recambios claros. Nosotros propusimos desde hace un tiempo una idea que permita contar con tres extranjeros por equipo que con el paso de los años puedan transformarse en fichas nacionales. A su vez jugar un torneo sub 23 durante todo el año en todo el país con el propósito de descubrir y alentar la formación de jugadores en el Uruguay”, explicó.
“Con buenas canchas y las tribunas lejos gana el mejor equipo”
Los deportistas consultados defienden que los equipos sean locales en sus canchas en las instancias decisivas y coinciden que para eso se debe mejorar la infraestructura. Para Pablo López el tema es claro. “Se debe sumar no emparejar para abajo, con buenas canchas y tribunas lejos gana el mejor equipo”, sentenció. El técnico playero afirma, al igual que sus colegas, que el tema seguridad no se debe descuidar si es que se quiere tener un campeonato en serio. “No puede pasar que un jugador vaya a sacar de costado y lo escupan reiteradamente”, remarcó López.
Para Álvaro Tito se debe trabajar para aumentar la capacidad de algunas canchas y permitir de esa manera que puedan ir hinchas visitantes, algo que no ocurre en algunos partidos de Liga por cuestiones de seguridad.
En cambio, el técnico de Hebraica y Macabi Leonardo Zylbersztein no está seguro que aplicar el sistema de localías sea justo para todos los equipos y para el desarrollo del campeonato. “Hay muchos cuadros que no pueden jugar en sus canchas contra rivales directos por temas de seguridad, el hecho que se fije el Palacio en cierta medida equipara todas las situaciones. No es lo mismo ir de visitante a Aguada o Goes que jugar contra esos equipos en el Palacio, nosotros somos visitantes en todas la canchas”, dijo. El hecho de que Macabi no sea un equipo muy convocante lo lleva a visitar todos los escenarios al punto que en el año nunca pisó el Palacio Peñarol hasta la instancia de play off cuando enfrentó a Welcome. “Nosotros jugamos por primera vez en el torneo ahí justo en el momento más importante mientras que nuestro rival había tenido varios partidos en esa cancha”, sostuvo. Welcome venía de eliminar a Aguada en octavos de final en una serie que necesitó de tres partidos. Justo es decir también que más allá de esa ventaja que dio Macabi se terminó imponiendo en esa instancia ante el equipo del Parque Rodó con un global de 3-0.
La gran siete
La final del campeonato se juega al mejor de siete en el Palacio Peñarol. Hasta semifinales las series de play off tienen como máximo cinco partidos. Este cambio genera división entre los entrenadores.
El técnico de Trouville, Álvaro Tito, considera que son muchos partidos. “Por lo general termina ganando el mejor equipo, no cambia demasiado, si llega a existir diferencia grande entre los finalistas la serie puede convertirse en aburrida”, dijo.
Marcelo Signorelli defiende este formato: “Está bien que se juegue así, pero sólo la final al mejor de siete, hasta semifinales se debe mantener al mejor de cinco”, sostuvo. Lo mismo piensa el entrenador playero Pablo López. “Es un formato justo para el equipo que hizo mejor las cosas, a la larga se termina imponiendo el que juega mejor, con una serie más corta puede entreverarse más”, afirmó.
Zylbersztein está de acuerdo con el sistema actual aunque también reconoce que al mejor de cinco le abre posibilidades a un equipo con menores recursos. También entiende que la atención está centrada en esa instancia y que el interés y la expectativa de la gente colaboran a que se jueguen más partidos.
El técnico de Goes Álvaro Ponce rechaza este formato: “Al mejor de siete le seguís dando la chance a los más poderosos de ganar siempre, si fuera al mejor de cinco le permitís a otros equipos con menos recursos de luchar por el título”, sentenció.
La autoridad
Ricardo Vairo es desde hace cinco años el presidente de la Liga Uruguaya de Básquetbol y es el responsable de haber levantado en el último tiempo la imagen de este deporte en nuestro país. Su principal desafío es lograr que el producto resulte atractivo para los medios, los hinchas y las marcas. El término “espectáculo” está presente todo el tiempo y es clave a la hora de planificar un campeonato.
Vairo es un gran defensor del actual torneo ya que entiende es emocionante de principio a fin. “En el torneo Clasificatorio nos encontramos que todos los equipos se juegan algo en todas las fechas, eso le da emoción y genera respuesta en los hinchas. Lo mismo ocurre en la Súper Liga y ni te digo en el Reclasificatorio, ahí te encontrás a veces con partidos más atractivos ya que el margen de error es mínimo”.
Algunos entrenadores sostienen que lo mejor sería jugar el Clasificatorio a dos ruedas lo cual le permitiría a los clubes tener más tiempo para prepararse y recuperarse de alguna racha negativa. Esto era así hasta hace unos años pero se descartó por un tema económico. “Estudiamos los números de las últimas diez Ligas y comprobamos que si bien se juegan más partidos se venden menos entradas y que la gente en la segunda rueda del Clasificatorio va menos a la cancha. Por lo general hay muchos equipos clasificados y otros sentenciados al descenso que terminan protagonizando encuentros malos y hasta algunos dudosos”, sentenció Vairo.
Según el presidente de la LUB, en los últimos cuatro años se triplicaron las entradas vendidas por temporada.
Además de jugar el Clasificatorio a una rueda, otro de los puntos que genera malestar en los entrenadores es el sorteo de las localías. Para Vairo esto no debería ser un problema ya que sostiene que en nuestro medio las localías no son tan fuertes como en otras partes del mundo. “Estudiamos este fenómeno en la última década y nos dio que los locales ganan el 55% de los puntos ante el 45% de los visitantes, creemos que eso no condiciona el futuro de los equipos en un torneo a una rueda”.
“Jugar más”
Los entrenadores coinciden en que se deberían jugar más partidos por temporada. Si lo comparamos con el formato de Liga anterior en el que el Clasificatorio tenía dos ruedas, la Súper Liga una y luego venían los play off, en la actualidad se juegan 90 partidos menos. Para Pablo López lo ideal sería tener diez meses de competencia, uno de licencia y otro dedicado a la preparación de la selección uruguaya cuando tenga actividad.
No soy yo, sos vos.
En este debate la televisión no puede estar al margen. Los dueños de los derechos de TV manejan y definen muchos aspectos fundamentales del torneo. Desde los horarios y días de los partidos pasando por los escenarios fijados. Según supo Zona Mixta, Tenfield rechazó en más de una ocasión el pedido de las autoridades de jugar los play off en las canchas de los clubes y no en el Palacio Peñarol como se viene desarrollando. La televisión prefiere transmitir esta instancia desde un escenario mayor en dobles jornadas priorizando el espectáculo.
Curiosamente en el momento más interesante el torneo no parece ser explotado de la mejor manera. Las dobles jornadas de cuartos de final se juegan entre semana y comienzan cerca de las siete de la tarde, horario poco habitual para el básquetbol si es que partimos de la base que en el resto del año los partidos se inician a las 21.15. Seguramente más de un hincha saldrá corriendo del trabajo para intentar ver a su equipo.
Los cuartos de final se juegan en el mes de febrero y coincide con el concurso de carnaval, evento que también es transmitido por la misma pantalla. Esto lleva a que quizás el producto no sea aprovechado al máximo. El primer encuentro de la primera fecha de los cuartos de final comenzó 18.40, el segundo partido se inició dos horas después y pegadito “Coco” Echagüe nos presentó desde el Teatro de Verano el conjunto que cerró la etapa del certamen carnavalero. “¬¿No sería mejor para el básquetbol que se jugará un partido por noche en horario central y en las canchas de los clubes?”, se preguntó uno de los dirigentes consultados. Ese mismo interés por ocupar la pantalla llevó a que las finales se extendieran a siete partidos por más que las últimas ediciones las series fueron definidas en menos encuentros.
El calendario marca que el torneo se juega de setiembre a abril y por más que coincida con el verano y las vacaciones de muchos, la mayoría afirma en que está bien que sea así porque se ajusta a las actividades internacionales.
Lo que queda claro es que el debate está instalado. Por un lado están aquellos que rechazan el formato actual y por otro los que lo apoyan. Mientras tanto, todos los años antes del comienzo del campeonato el sistema de disputa es sometido a votación y los dirigentes, pese a alguna postura contraria, lo terminan aprobando por mayoría.
